Hello, I am Rhaiza Vélez Soto, a clinical social worker with a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Texas at Arlington and a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. With over 10 years of experience, I specialize in mental health and substance abuse, providing support to adolescents, adults, families and couples in various settings, such as clinics, schools, hospitals, communities and private practice.
My areas of expertise include the management and reduction of symptoms associated with anxiety disorders, depression, suicidal ideation, and anger management. I also have experience designing substance abuse rehabilitation treatments and am certified in the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for adolescents and adults.
My therapeutic approach is patient-centered, recognizing that each individual is the expert in their own life. I work collaboratively with my clients to identify problems, explore their roots, and set achievable goals that help them take control of their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.
My vocation for therapy began in my childhood, observing how mental health challenges and social barriers affected my family and friends. During my training in Puerto Rico, I confirmed the great need for accessible and quality services for people of different ages and cultures, especially in the Hispanic community.
To stay up-to-date, I continually train myself in evidence-based therapeutic tools and models that can contribute to the emotional well-being of my patients.
My advice to those considering starting therapy:
"We all face challenges that can make us feel sad, anxious, or hopeless. Seeking help is an act of courage and an investment in your well-being. You are not alone, and I am here to help you regain control and achieve the emotional stability you deserve."
I am especially committed to serving the Hispanic community, using my bilingual skills to break down linguistic and cultural barriers that may prevent access to necessary help.
In the future, I plan to specialize in adolescent trauma interventions, to continue offering meaningful support to those who need it most. I am here to help you build a path to healing and a more fulfilling life.
