Post-traumatic stress disorder is when a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing a frightening or traumatic event. One can develop the disorder either by experiencing a traumatic event, seeing others going through a traumatic time, and/or knowing that something traumatic happened to a loved one.

Various events can cause post-traumatic stress; For example, car accidents, wars, violent assaults, abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, psychological), health problems, etc.

It is estimated that 1 in 3 people who have experienced traumatic events may develop post-traumatic stress disorder. Studies still do not explain why some develop this disorder and others do not.

The symptoms are quite severe that they interfere with the person's daily life.

Symptoms include:

– Intrusive memories such as nightmares, reliving the traumatic event as if it is happening again, disturbing dreams or nightmares, and physical reactions to things that remind you of the traumatic event.

– Try to avoid thinking or talking about the traumatic event

– avoid places, activities or people that remind you of the event

– Negative thoughts about oneself, other people, or the world

– Memory problems

– Difficulty maintaining close relationships

– Lack of interest in activities you previously liked

– Always feel alert

– Difficulty concentrating

– Irritability

– Feelings of guilt or shame

– Mood instability

The support of friends and family is essential in the recovery and treatment of a person who has been affected by a traumatic event. Having adequate social support has shown changes in people who demonstrate symptoms.

If the symptoms have made life difficult for the person, it is important to seek help from a professional. Various types of therapy can relieve post-traumatic stress such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
